Book Description

Carol is delighted to be leaving her tiny prison cell behind to take her place in a luxury retirement home. She’s hoping her past as a serial killer won’t come to light so she can make a few friends and find some murder-free hobbies. But it’s not long before a fellow resident—who happens to be a former police commissioner—drops dead, and Carol’s  true identity is leaked—making catching up over daily activities of bingo and baking rather awkward.

Just her luck, Carol soon realizes that the victim wasn’t the only former law enforcement officer at Sheldon Oaks—it’s filled to the brim with former cops, barristers, and government representatives, her newfound friends included. And everyone thinks Carol’s guilt is a no-brainer, but she is ready to prove them dead wrong…without killing anyone, for once.

My Review

First of all, this book is hilarious. Serial killers are not usually funny, but this book makes murder into a romp. And I’m reluctant to give too much away, but Carol only killed bad people who really needed to enter their “find out” phase.

Second of all, Carol is likeable. She wants to make friends with her new housemates, but the shadow of her infamy hangs over her. Society has changed so much during Carol’s incarceration and she’s just out here doing her best.

I love that the narrative unfolds from multiple perspectives as everyone tries to figure out the identity of the killer. Everyone means well and most were quite competent in their prime, but those halcyon days are long past and it shows.

I would absolutely recommend I’m Not the Only Murderer in My Retirement Home. This is my first experience reading one of Craig’s books, but it won’t be my last. This would make a wonderful limited series; it reminded me of Only Murders in the Building.

I received a digital ARC of this book from Berkeley/NetGalley.
