Book Description

Either you’re in or you’re out.

Welcome to the Thrashers, the elite friend group at New Helvetia High.

They’re everything everyone wants to be.

Jodi Dillon was never meant to be one of them. Julian, Lucy, Paige, and the infamous Zack Thrasher are rich, sophisticated, and love attention. Jodi feels out of place, but Zack’s her childhood best friend, so she’s in.

Then Emily Mills, who desperately wanted to be a Thrasher, dies—and the whispers about the Thrashers begin. As Emily’s journal surfaces, detectives close in, and Jodi faces an impossible choice: betray her friends or protect herself.

But as eerie messages and strange occurrences escalate, it becomes clear—Emily isn’t done with them yet.

A twisty thrill-ride of unforgettable drama and suspense that “encapsulates the vulnerability of adolescents playing adult games” (Ali Hazelwood) from USA Today bestselling author Julie Soto, The Thrashers will keep you up at night desperate to read just one more page.

My Review

Oh my gosh, this was a wild book. If I Know What You Did Last Summer and Mean Girls had a baby, this would be it.

Jodi is a bit of an outsider in her friend group and that gives her a unique perspective on how the clique operates. Their MO seems to be to befriend someone by drawing them into the group, only to discard them when they get bored. When Emily, one of the discards, dies, the question of the group’s culpability is raised.

But with all that going on, there’s also a supernatural element, which made the plot more engaging in my opinion because I never knew what was going to happen next. What was real? What was happening? It was so much more than the seemingly straightforward question of whether or not the clique was morally and legally responsible for Emily’s death. I don’t want to give too much away, but there’s clearly something that’s not adding up. And even Julie doesn’t know what’s going on or who she can believe or even who she should trust.

I would absolutely recommend The Thrashers. It appears as though this will be immediately available on Kindle Unlimited upon its release, so KU members should definitely consider grabbing it. I really enjoyed the blending of genres and the ambiguity. I don’t read a ton of YA, but this was a great book that kept me engaged throughout the entire reading experience.

I received a digital ARC of this book from St. Martin’s/NetGalley.
