Book Description

Quito Cruz might be a genius piano player and composer in New York City now but it doesn’t mean that he’s any closer to his Broadway dream. Although Quito knows what the problem is. Or rather who. Because ever since that night in college—with pretty-boy jock Emmett Aoki—his inspiration has been completely MIA . .  .

Now Quito’s dad wants him to put on a charity performance in his hometown. And there’s one hella big string attached: convince Emmett—now one of Hollywood’s hottest celebrities—to perform.

It’s all shaping up to be the biggest musical fiasco of Quito’s life. Especially when Emmett agrees to attend, and Quito realizes that undeniable vibe between them is stronger than ever. Because there’s nothing simple about falling for a movie star . . . even when he’s pitch-perfect.

My Review

This was such a sweet and heartwarming book. Quito is such an earnest narrator. His NYC life isn’t perfect but he’s (mostly) happy with where he is. So it’s a bit tough for him to return to his hometown and even more difficult to reconnect with his former best friend who just so happens to be famous.

The timeline shifts between the present day and high school, which helps give the reader a sense of the backstory that leads to the end of Quito and Emmett’s friendship. It also kept me always wondering what was going to happen next in each timeline.

I loved that Quito is a bit highstrung and a bit of a nervous wreck and that;s what makes him so endearing. Also, the love for music absolutely shines through the entire narrative. The one thing I didn’t like is the lack of communication, especially since it’s that very same lack of communication that led to the Big Misunderstanding between Quito and Emmett. The romance genre has evolved so much over the years that it would be nice if we evolved beyond misunderstandings that could have been resolved with a single conversation.

I would absolutely recommend All the Right Notes. I’m looking forward to reading more from Lim in the future.

I received a digital ARC of this book from Forever/NetGalley.
